The rules

What Queensland requires, in plain English

Smoke alarms

Photoelectric alarms (AS 3786:2014), all interconnected so they sound together, in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the house, and on every level. Under 10 years old. Where the existing alarm is hardwired, the new one must be hardwired too. Rentals and homes being sold must comply now. Every other home must comply from 1 January 2027.

Safety switches

Rentals must have a safety switch on power circuits, and homes being sold need one before settlement. Best practice is a safety switch on every circuit, so one faulty appliance does not black out the whole house.

General information only, based on Queensland Fire Department and Electrical Safety Office guidance. Kelly confirms exactly what your property needs on the day.

Not sure where you stand? Kelly checks it and tells you straight, no upsell.

The compliance visit

Smoke alarms and safety switches. One visit. One certificate.

1

What is included

Photoelectric interconnected alarms in every required location: hardwired 240V with battery backup where required, or 10-year lithium wireless-interconnected alarms where there is no wiring, so ceilings stay closed. Every safety switch tested with a proper tester, not just the button, and failed or missing ones replaced. Fire safety kits with strobe, bed shaker and push alert for anyone hard of hearing.

2

What you walk away with

A compliance certificate for your property manager, tenant file, insurer or solicitor, and alarms that stop chirping at 3am.

3

What it costs

Most homes sit in the call-out to mid-size range, depending on the number of alarms and whether they are hardwired. Kelly quotes before he starts, so there are no surprises.

Every Queensland home has to comply from 1 January 2027, and every sparky in the region is about to get the same phone call. Book now and beat the rush.

Workmanship guarantee: if an alarm or switch Kelly installed fails because of his work, he comes back at no charge.

Who we help

Homeowners, landlords and property managers

Homeowners

Beat the 2027 deadline without opening a ceiling, and know your family gets woken up wherever the fire starts.

Landlords

Stay compliant between tenancies, keep your insurer happy, and have a certificate on file before the lease is signed.

Property managers

One licensed electrician who answers the phone, turns up when he says and sends the certificate, so owners and tenants stop chasing you.

Why Kelly

Licensed, local, and he actually turns up

Kelly from Electrikell Qld in hi-vis working on a roof-mounted hot water unit in the Gladstone region
  • Licensed electrical contractor, so hardwired alarms are legal and the certificate holds up when a buyer or insurer asks.
  • Smoke alarms and safety switches done in the same visit, so you book one trip, not two.
  • Wireless-interconnected alarms where wiring is not practical, so there is no mess and no ceiling repairs.
  • Owner-operated in Gladstone since 2018, so the person who quotes is the person who installs.
  • Answers the phone and calls back, which reviewers keep mentioning, so tenants and property managers are not left waiting.
  • Takes emergency calls if a safety switch fails after hours, so your compliance sparky is also your emergency contact.

Did a great job... Value for money... Always let you know if he was held up a little... Something that most tradies seam to neglect.

Questions

Compliance questions, answered

Does my home really need new smoke alarms by 2027?

If your alarms are not photoelectric, not interconnected, older than 10 years or missing from any bedroom, hallway or level, yes. From 1 January 2027 every Queensland home must comply, not just rentals and sales.

Hardwired or wireless?

Where the existing alarm is hardwired, the replacement must be hardwired, with battery backup. Where there is no wiring, 10-year lithium wireless-interconnected alarms are allowed and avoid opening ceilings.

Can I install them myself?

Battery wireless units can be owner-installed, but hardwired alarms must be done by a licensed electrician. Property managers and buyers usually ask for a licensed install with a certificate.

What do landlords need?

Compliant smoke alarms now, a safety switch on power circuits, and alarms tested and cleaned within 30 days before each new tenancy. Kelly can fit, test and certify before the lease starts.

Why does my safety switch keep tripping?

Usually a faulty appliance, moisture in an outdoor power point or a damaged cable. Kelly finds the cause rather than just swapping the switch.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the number of alarms and whether they are hardwired. Most homes sit in the call-out to mid-size range. Kelly quotes before he starts.

Do you work with property managers?

Yes. Tell Kelly how many properties you look after and he will work out access and invoicing with you.
